Pocatello, ID (August 26, 2024) – Idaho State Police troopers confirmed on Sunday that a local man driving the wrong way on Interstate 86 crashed head-on into another vehicle, resulting in major injuries at the scene.

The wrong-way driver, a 32-year-old man from Idaho Falls, was cited for driving under the influence following the 7:30 p.m. crash just east of Pocatello Regional Airport, Idaho State Police said. His name hasn't been released. The crash occurred while the 32-year-old was allegedly driving a 2001 GMC pickup truck eastbound on the freeway's westbound lanes. He slammed head-on into a 2007 Chevy truck driven by a 77-year-old man from Ammon, state police said. The 77-year-old's identity also hasn't been released.

Both drivers were transported via ambulances to Portneuf Medical Center. There have been no updates on their conditions, but state police confirmed the 32-year-old was charged with first-offense DUI. The pickups were totaled in the crash, and Interstate 86 was partially blocked for over 90 minutes. According to the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), a few of the details and events leading up to the collision remain unknown, but the crash is still under investigation by ISP, and any witnesses were asked to get in touch.

Our thoughts are extended to the injured victims and their loved ones in hopes of their full recovery.

Wrong-Way Accidents in Idaho

Head-on collisions, severe injuries, and fatalities are all potential outcomes of a motorist driving the wrong way on the road. As you may expect, head-on crashes are among the most severe types of auto accidents, as both vehicles typically travel at high speeds and collide directly. Of course, wrong-way accidents are no exception, as each accident on the roadways involves unique circumstances and facts.

Moreover, specific causes of wrong-way accidents are observed more frequently. Texting and driving is one form of distracted driving that can result in a motorist veering into the wrong lane, for example. Every year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that texting and driving is responsible for over 2,800 fatalities in the United States.
